Rolling 127 film

So you have some awesome cameras, classic or vintage (yes there is a difference) and you have been buying Efke or Adox b&w film. But you want colour. Black and white is amazing but doesn't show the sunset's colours or your lizard's amazing orange. But as 127 film was officially discontinued in 1995, where do you get colour 127. You can buy old films but their colours are unstable as you do not know how the person who sold it to you has stored it. Sure he says her kept it refrigerated for 20years but can you really trust that? What else is there?

Well not much really. You can source (rarely) konika colour film in 100ft rolls but did you your kodak still makes portra NC in 127 size. It's called 46mm film. Trickery at it's best!! Ok so you spend the $60 for 100ft (30m approx) for your fresh portra NC. it arrives in this really cool box.

You almost feel professional.. After all it's a pro pack :-)
Inside is a tin. A sealed Tin. If the tin is not sealed, return it. (unless you bought it advertised as partly used. Of course)

Now what.?

Ok now we need;
1 x dark room or bag ($25) eBay
1 x scissors
1 x spool of tape. (I use electrical tape )
lengths of aluminium foil cut a little wider than a spool and long enough to roll a spool up.
Several 127 spools
Several 127 backing papers.

You have been saving the spools and backing papers from your b&w haven't you? ( or requesting the return from the film place if you don't develop your own)

If not, stop here and come back when you have a few papers and spools.

Film rolling supplies

Ok gather everything listed above except the foil.

Tutorial

Grab your backing paper and unscroll. Have stuff heavy enough to hold it unrolled.
Look for the the markers on the backing paper indicating the start of the film and the end.

All brands are slightly different but there is usually a line or some marker.

Put tape a the start and end of the paper, you can use a paperclip or something else but I use tape as it doesn't move from it's place. Roll the paper in the correct direction so you start is the outside.

Tutorial and trim it to be neat.

Unseal the film but don't open it.

Place a spool, a paper, the scissors, cut tape (several pieces) and the unsealed film into you light proof bag ( or set up in your dark room)

Seal and let's use touch.. From here on, I am going to use a soiled film to show you what we are doing in the dark.

Feel for the tin of film and open it. There is an inner bag and tape holding the end of the film. Take out of the bag and remove the tape. Set these aside. Use the tin to store the spool so it doesn't roll away (especially is you have several in the bag at once.)

Partly unroll the paper. You are now feeling for the start tape marker, when you feel it, get your big roll of film and match the end of the film to the start marker. Tape it down.

Rolling the paper up, line the film along the paper you are now feeling for the end marker. Your film should line up nicely on the backing paper and roll up in your left hand (if you are right handed).

When you have reached the end marker, you carefully cut the film. Not the film and paper!! And use I have done this accidentally. Grr.

Ok now we have a rolled film on the backing paper in our right hand and still a bit to roll so roll up the paper to the end. Place the big film roll aside, and if you can juggle it, store it in the bag you took it out of ( just to be safe don't want expose 100ft of film accidentally, if it can happen, it will.)

Find the spool, and feel for the big slot. Some are obvious, some are not.

Insert the end of the paper into the big slot pulling it through.

Start winding back towards the start. Make sure the label ( if there is ine tucks in. Feel for the untaped end of the film.

Important find the end of the film and tuck it in otherwise this while thing unravels quite quickly.

After ensuring the tail is tucked in keep rolling but don't over tighten the film (it'll scratch)

Getting to the taped start of the film, feel gently for a bulge. Sometimes there is one, sometimes you get lucky. Untape the start and stick down again. Keep rolling the leader.

Tape the film closed.

Ensuring the 100ft roll film is sealed up in it's bag and tin again, you can open your dark bag.

Your film is ready to go into your camera but if you want to start it, grab your tin foil and roll it up and place in the fridge.

Yay!! Lots of colour film for you shooting pleasure.

oooo over a week I am getting bad..

ANYWAY

I received a Hawkeye Ace Deluxe ooo the deluxe.. you say..
Well the little information in the net ias the same crap regurgitated over and over.. But no one has looked into it. Well I was inclined to believe the references to this camera being made in one year 1938 until one lady has har Grandmother's one in its postal packaging and it is post marked 1937. soooo It was made in at least two years.

It was made in the Harrow Factory in the UK ONLY and was given away with comics

It had a card box and the rest s the shutter assembly mounted to wood.

Kodak had these as premium line cameras and hence alost no records were kept, at least they didn't appear in catalogues.
I have no idea of the aperture or the shutter speed and it seems no one else does either SOOOO As it is a box camera made by Kodak, I will make te assumption of f/13 (Although the hole looks small) and a shutter speed of 1/30th. I have put a Efke 100 film in so lets work with that.

Oh and the deluxe? Means I got lugs for my camera strap. YAY!! There were 4 models two with smooth faces and two with rough faces.

And textured face = Hawkeye Ace deluxe.


The next Box Brownie comes from the UK (As I prefer UK boxes)

This is similar to Orangetim's Box Brownie Model D but his is much older. (1946-1953)
the second type of Model D this one was made from 1953-1957. This model has flash contacts, a striped enamel face and triangular catch at the back Also a tripod mount but not all of this model have a tripod mount

Model F

Produced in 1955-1957 (2 years)

Deluxe "Sporty" version of the Model E, it has (As you can see) Tan covering and bras trim. Essentially the same as the Model E

the last one is the Kodak 44A
A plastic camera built between 1959 and 1966, it takes 12 44mm square pictures and this is where the camera gets its name. There was a 44B but this was produced for three years only and in conjunction with the 44A. (sigh why really??)

It was the first camera to employ a plastic taking lens from Combined Optical Industries Ltd,using "Perspex". Only two stops numbered 12 and 13, to allow some degree of control over the exposure. BUT you can only use during the day :-( I got this camera from Ebay and it has film in it which I am using up to develop. We shall see if the film wasn't exposed before being sent to me.

Randomness

I have been following the discussion on the flickr caffenol group and they have been arguing about salf the type what to use and what is forbidden etc.. Geez guys mellow out. Plus all they have done is totally confuse me. I know MY recipie works and the one from Reinhold's blog works (well all of his works ) but the other arsehats? Well one guy claims to have invented or copywrited a name FFS. ANYWAY I think I wil unfollow that group. Talk about being anal about stuff. I thought I understood the process and had a good idea of times but now I am not so sure.

Got a lost from from Vision image and Tim's E-6 film. My credit card refused to pay for my two E-6 films so they had to stay behind but i'll get them next fortnight.

Mystery Film.

I received the Land camera from the FIlm Photography podcast but the only film I had was 1500 sepia and this just doesn't work in this camera. The 101 only had two settings 100 and 3000 and the sepia is 1500. If I choose 100 I blow out the film and if I choose 3000 its black for underdeveloped. Damn I was all excited but its a no go. I wonder what camera I can use the 1500 sepia in. Ideas??

A stereographic camera arrived from the lovely people at Holga Direct. They tested it before posting it as I have had it with Lomography cameras. You will remember that I didn't like the holga last time and sold it. But this is the only affordable stereographic camera on the market.
My 2nd real holga. The original 120 holga & I did not agree & I sold it. This one is because I can't afford an antique stereoscopic camera.
The customer service from Holga direct is awesome. I do recommend them (And beg for a discount..if you are on twitter but shhh)

Developed three lost films, All blank. But my developer worked wonderfully. That is 6 films in the one batch of caffenol. So not a total loss. beats paying $10 r roll to get blank rolls back.

Been playing with the T50 as the AE-1 is in hospital.

yes you read that. No power for me. **Sigh** This is so depressing I cannot start to tell you. I just cry in the futility of it all. Better to sell my house and move home. I am such a fail right now.

Tomorrow is the closest weekend to 620 day and I am not feeling the excitement I had. I want to shoot 620 but my frame of mind it too dark to shoot anything worthy.

Maybe use the big red No2 #Box #brownie red. These came out in blue, brown, gray, green or Red. Made from 1929-1933 at a cost of $3  cardboard body with metal cad but then I realised I can't as it is 120 not 620.. Hmmm The tourist?

fuck it I'm going to bed whilst I have power for an electric blanket.

Zzzz


I have had my AE-1 in my work bag for a week. I have the soldiers camera I my work bag.. I have a pinhole camera with me. And yet I have not taken one shot. Not one. I was going to go to River Island to be inspired but I need to post a heap of stuff on Tuesday. All my eBay actions ended at the same time ::sigh:: and two are large items bugger.

Have been pondering which cameras to sell I am too attached to my box brownies so forget that but I have a few that don't fit my mould of collecting and would be great in another collector's hands. Hmmm

Will need to try to stay up tomorrow as it is one of two days off. huh I work 6 hrs of my day off. Grr

Lost films developed on Wednesday

The surprise was the ilford FP3 that gave an odd colour in the scans two little kids in a back lane/yard. Cute. Film was sourced from the UK so I will assume that is where they were taken

Came across a camera "electric eye" from canon that I was reading on. It has no manual settings. A person told me that he takes awesome night shots with it but for the life of me I cannot see how! This goes for the canon T 50 as well

Ack how to I set the shutter speed??? EEK
But with a automatic winder you can get awesome 1.4fps and BEFORE you snort in derision... Remember entry level digitals are 3 fps...and this is film

Trip to parramatta

David had bought me a hairdressing voucher to take care of my damaged tresses. The desert had not been kind and I had not had time to get to the salon. That, and my hairdresser closed up shop. So I made the trek to Parramatta. I packed light. The canon AE-1, a Box brownie ( with film) for Tim, who said he may come down from the wild west a soldier's camera and an ikonta 520/18

I arrived at parramatta with an hour to spare and so shot a roll of film or two. I was using the ikonta as I had found a roll of film in it. The chrome film in the AE-1 was also finished. It was a lot of fun learning to use the vest pocket camera. :-) it is so tiny.
I had finished the Starlet Verichome film earlier that morning.

David joined me for the trip home and upon arrival I set to work developing the ikonta and the starlet film.

I did 8 minutes on the mystery ikonta film and it was under developed. I got nothing from it. :-( I was bummed at myself. The starlet film ( 1969 expired verichrome) developed nicely in 16 minutes of used developer. Who said you cant use it twice.
Hung both to dry and went to bed.

This morning, I scanned the starlet film then headed to the post office.
In the mail was one kodacolor II from another state in Australia with a 35mm canister that may have film in it and a sealed from the factory ilford film. I wanna get into that canister..In another parcel fron the UK, was an ilford film. An FP3" hmm 1960's?

I spent the afternoon developing both films. I mixed up a 350ml batch of fresh caffenol with 50g of iodine salt and added it to last night's developer.

Started with the kodacolor II c-22 film. 11minutes at 21C with 16 minutes fixing as I was using old fixer.

It turned bright red when I pulled it out. Hmm 16 minutes was too much and I am unsure as to what is going on with this film. Well, I got photos. Hanging it up, inrecycled the Salted developer and dunked the Ilford into it, 16 minutes at 21C and 12 minutes used fixer. Again photos. Cool but maybe 20minutes would have been better

Camera of the week is the vest pocket "soldier's" camera, it's small and cute. Trouble is I a, running out of 127 film. :-(

What I have been doing

Well, not all that much. Tim came over for his birthday, bring two films for developing, SO I made him develop a film himself. As it was cold and I didn't have three 1L bottles I didn't tackle the E-6. Easier in winter to drop it off at the professional lab.




Although for speed I had to load his film onto the de wooing spool, all went well. I buttered up and didn't give him 500l of liquid, resulting him having a stripe on his film. OOPS but he had images and made with coffee. He seems happy....

Due to time constraints, we left the film to dry in my bathroom and he left for home.

I have managed to develop a c-22 film, not too clear, the film was very dark :-( almost unusable Still, in most frames there was an image-

I also received a bill for my last commercial processing of b&w film of $113!!! Screw that. I can do as well so I am only going to send E-6 and even that may stop.

I have decided my next challenge is wine developing. I have a great recipe that I wish to try and two bottle of Shiraz. As i hate shiraz this will not a great loss. :-) to save the wine comment below and I'll trade for something cheaper.
